The 12th annual Race the Rattler footrace on Queens Birthday weekend was a success, both for the participants and for the Gympie community, with extensive TV and media coverage reaching into Brisbane and interstate.
It was our second biggest event, with participant and supporter numbers just under last year’s record levels.
Publicity from the event both for the Rattler and Gympie Region was extensive, with all commercial TV networks, regional radio (commercial and ABC) and regional press carrying the story.
The economic impact both from the 500 out – of – town attendees, and from future activity generated by the publicity, is a boost for the local economy, particularly for tourist related businesses.
The participants were enthusiastic in their praise of the public who encouraged them as they ran, and of the volunteers who manned barricades, water points, and the start/finish at Dagun and Gympie. The day went off very well, reflecting on the great efforts of the workers from the many organisations involved.
The Valley Rattler also thanks the sponsors who supported the event in challenging economic times. We had Polleys, Channel Seven, classic Hits 4GY, Hi-Way 1, Cooroy Mountain Spring Water, Coates Hire, Mitre 10 and Gympie Times, plus a good number of Team Sponsors.
Government agencies assisting were the Gympie Regional Council, Police, and Main Roads,
Volunteer groups included the SES, St Johns Ambulance, Dagun Community, Gympie Rotary and our own crew.
